Thank you for viewing our website! River Rat Steelhead Jigs was started a few years ago in an effort to make a product that met the quality standards of founder Tony Torrence. The jigs previously available used hooks that didn’t withstand big fish and the heads chipped easily. He examined the hooks available on the market today to find that Gamakatsu was a superior product. He also discovered that powder paint was as tough as nails. This is not to say that it won’t chip, but it does outlast any vinyl paint available today.
Next Chris Daughters, owner of the Caddis Fly Angling Shop, asked if he knew anyone producing jig heads for tying steelhead jigs. He had been selling so much marabou due to the jig craze he felt there was a market for the heads in his shop. He was right! In the meantime Tony’s friends where constantly pestering him for the jigs he was tying. After much badgering they finally convinced him to start River Rat Steelhead Jigs. The rest is history.
Now, where I fit into the picture. Tony and I are good fishing buddies. For the duration of the business I have been helping Tony during my spare time. Testing products, tying jigs and bouncing ideas back and forth have been a part of my fishing excursions for some time now. I have also used the jigs extensively as a fishing guide. When Tony, due to obligations to his family and work at the hospital, told me that he was interested in selling the business I jumped at the opportunity.
I understand that Tony’s special attention to detail and vast knowledge is the main reason River Rat has become what it is today. This is why I want to assure our customers that this will not change. Tony will stay on staff as a consultant and will always very much be a part of the business. The goal in the change of hands is to expand River Rat Steelhead Jigs to its full potential and meet the needs of every customer to the max.
